A combat outfit returns from the war. Veterans Jimmy Stevens (Edmond O'Brien), Eddie, Mike and Ollie collect their twenty dollar assistance checks every week. The guys meet former W.A.V.E. Jean Madison (Wanda Hendrix). Jimmy dubs her "The Admiral". Jean finds out that her fiance has abandoned her and Jimmy invites her to spend the day with the guys. Jean is astonished by the energy the men put into avoiding legitimate work, and the ingenious ways they have found to live cheap.
