The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a filmed 1957 ninety-minute musical color television special originally shown by NBC on November 26, 1957, as their Thanksgiving Day offering for that year. Based on the famous poem by Robert Browning and using the music of Edvard Grieg with special lyrics by Hal Stanley and Irving Taylor, it starred Van Johnson, Claude Rains (in his only singing and dancing role), Lori Nelson, Jim Backus, and Kay Starr. It was directed by Broadway veteran Bretaigne Windust. The program was successful enough to be repeated the following year and then syndicated to many local stations, where it was rerun annually for many years, in the tradition of other holiday specials. The film was briefly released to movie theatres in 1966, where it did not fare nearly as well.

The Flying Deuces was the first Laurel and Hardy film not to be produced by Hal Roach, although they had played supporting roles in MGM features previously. The film was made and released by RKO Radio Pictures.

The film did well, and the duo decided to leave Hal Roach Studios and move to 20th Century Fox after finishing Saps at Sea, under the impression that they would gain greater creative control under a new studio. This turned out to be a mistake.

Director A. Edward Sutherland and Stan Laurel did not get on well together. Sutherland said he would rather eat a tarantula than work with Laurel again.

The Jack Benny Program was telecast on CBS from October 29, 1950, to September 15, 1964, and on NBC from September 25, 1964, to September 10, 1965. 343 episodes were produced.

The television show was a seamless continuation of Benny’s radio program, employing many of the same players, the same approach to situation comedy and some of the same scripts. The suffix “Program” instead of “Show” was also a carryover from radio, where “program” rather than “show” was used frequently for presentations in the non-visual medium.

The Jack Benny Program appeared infrequently during its first two years on CBS TV. The show then ran every fourth week for the next two years. During the 1953-54 season, half the episodes were filmed during the summer and the others were live, a schedule which allowed Benny to continue doing his radio show. From 1955 until 1960, the show was on every other week, and it was seen weekly after 1960.

You Bet Your Life is an American radio and television quiz show. The first and most famous version was hosted by Groucho Marx, of Marx Brothers fame, with the unflappable announcer and assistant George Fenneman. The show debuted on radio in 1947, then made the transition to the NBC television network in 1950. The television version was changed very little from the radio version. It was filmed before a studio audience, then slightly edited for television broadcast. In 1960 it was renamed The Groucho Show and ran a further year.

The first Amos n’ Andy film. Amos n Andy creators Gosden and Correll were white actors familiar with minstrel traditions. They met in Durham, North Carolina in 1920, and by the fall of 1925, they were performing nightly song-and-patter routines on the Chicago Tribune’s station WGN. Since the Tribune syndicated Sidney Smith’s popular comic strip The Gumps, which had successfully introduced the concept of daily continuity, WGN executive Ben McCanna thought the notion of a serialized drama could also work on radio. He suggested to Gosden and Correll that they adapt The Gumps to radio. They instead proposed a series about “a couple of colored characters” and borrowed certain elements of The Gumps. Their new series, Sam ‘n’ Henry, began January 12, 1926, fascinating radio listeners throughout the Midwest. That series became popular enough that in late 1927 Gosden and Correll requested that it be distributed to other stations on phonograph records in a “chainless chain” concept that would have been the first use of radio syndication as we know it today.

A combat outfit returns from the war. Veterans Jimmy Stevens (Edmond O’Brien), Eddie, Mike and Ollie collect their twenty dollar assistance checks every week. The guys meet former W.A.V.E. Jean Madison (Wanda Hendrix). Jimmy dubs her “The Admiral”. Jean finds out that her fiance has abandoned her and Jimmy invites her to spend the day with the guys. Jean is astonished by the energy the men put into avoiding legitimate work, and the ingenious ways they have found to live cheap.
